Having the friends contribute toward construction of the Bahá'í House of Worship in Chile was the best going-away present a youth leaving for a year of service at Bosch Bahá'í School could get.

jamalf1.jpgJamal Baghdadi, a recent graduate of Grant High School in Portland, Oregon, invited area Bahá'ís and guests to his Aug. 20, 2006, flute recital and Temple fundraiser. For an appreciative audience he performed selections by Haydn, Fauré and Dulon.

Bahá'ís present contributed more than $250 to the Temple Fund, while guests chose to give $50 to the Oregon Food Bank.

"I was very pleased with my service for Bahá'u'lláh helping contribute toward the Temple, which I hope to see built soon," said Jamal.

Jamal said he is excited to be serving at Bosch. When he first thought about the year of service, he considered going overseas to gain experience outside the United States.

Then he read an article in The American Bahá'í that helped him to recognize his immediate goal. The article told about the martyr Zaynab, and he decided to serve in the spirit of her sacrifice.

As recorded by Nabil in The Dawn-Breakers, Zaynab, seeing the trials and hardships her male companions were made to endure, disguised herself in male attire and fought for five months with "unrivalled heroism the forces of the enemy."

In the end, Zaynab gave her life as a shower of bullets was fired by the enemy. After her death 20 women of her acquaintance became believers in the Cause of the Báb.
